Time art Ideas

Bio-art

I've always had a interest in biology, particularly the human body and it's processes. Because this has something that I've liked for a long time, I want to incorporate this subject into my time art work. All biological process happen simultaneously and mostly automatically for/ in certain amounts of times.

Fight or Flight
My first idea is displaying someone possibly standing up, which a situation, such as a horror movie playing, playing in the background (which will require a green screen). On the second screen will be one of the body's responses to this situation, for example because it's a horror movie the person may be scared, so there will be a image of the pupil dialating and/or hairs raising on the arm. On the third screen there will be a heartbeat and possibly a heart? Which will increase because the person is scared. These three things will happen at the same time. Every 20 or 30 seconds the situation will change where we will see the heart beat decreasing and the body responses and the person is more relaxed ( maybe the person would be sleeping?). This is a reflection of the fight or flight response theory, where our body acts quickly to certain situations.

Body reaction
I want to show how the body reacts to certain situation in relation to the brain, and movement rather than on my first idea, focusing on homeostasis bodily changes. On the first screen some one will get hurt (maybe stub there toe or put their hand on something hot), which will be shown in slow motion. The middle screen will display what happens inside the brain showing pulses down to that area, this wont be shown in a realistic way, almost in a more animation like manner. In the middle screen there could possibly be timer included to show how fast the response is. Then the third screen will show the response, including their facial reaction. This will all be done in slow motion. I am unsure yet if I will sure a variety of situations/responses.

Breathing
On the first screen there would be a clip of someone appearing out of darkness and putting their face into a clear box of water, so the camera view will be taken from below so you can see their whole face. The second screen will reflect whats going on inside the body, maybe words appearing showing how they are feeling, and what there mind is going through as they increasingly start to panic. The first screen will show the person from a different angle, so when they start to breath out you can clearly see the rate of bubbles escaping from their mouth and nose, this can be shown in slow motion. These will all occur at the same time, until the person withdraws at the end, and then the loop starts again. On the middle screen there could possibly be a timer again, to show how long the person is holding their breath ect.

Peta Clancy and Helen Pynor (sound by Gail Priest), The Body is a Big Place

Helen Pynor has a background in science but later studied visual art. Three years ago she also became a doctor of philosophy. Her practice combines biological science and visual expression to explore the inside of our bodies, and to investigate the relationship between the physicality of the human body and its culturally constructed status.
During the show we will be talking about how she managed to get her hands on a fresh human brain but Helen will also discuss some of her broader projects such asThe Body Is A Big Place, a large-scale installation that explores organ transplantation and the thresholds between life and death.

Handmade photography reenactments from movies

The Dark Nighty-Night

Handmade photography reenactments from movies

'Sometimes what you need to get creative is just a pile of cardboard boxes and a baby, who needs to be entertained. This is exactly what inspired Leon Mackie and Lilly Lang to recreate their favourite film scenes after moving into their new home.'

I loved that they have used homemade sets, to create a humorous and extremely cute reenactment of famous movie scenes. It shows that you can create imaginative things with such little  and basic materials. This reminds me of the style of the photographer Mathias Wahner pieces, using serious memories from events, and in this case film scenes, and creating a more humorous feel. It shows how things can be interpreted differently by different people, in creative ways.

Methods for Photography

I wanted to create and display my photography in a more unique way, rather than just printing it off and mounting it. Because I am looking at the subject of recycled art/photography, I want to make some aspect of my photograph out of something that can be recycled, or had a different purpose beforehand. I had been researching alternative ways of 'printing' photos, and came across many methods that included making own formulas. However, I researched these methods where quite dangerous and expensive, as I would of had to deal with substances like ammonium citrate. Looking further I found the Anthotype method, which consists of crushing flower, or plants with distilled water and leaving in sunlight with a photograph to create a print of a specific colour (it still picks up the different tones of the photo).

I think this would be an interesting way to experiment with photography, and connects with the subject of recycling materials for a new purpose. Flowers/plants can include spinach, Daisy, Red Wine, Pansy, Onion and Beetroot. Also another interesting thing about Anthotypes, is when on display they can fade, due to light continuing to change its tone. It is not a photography method for creating photos for long lasting memories, unless its kept in a photo album or a dark place.

Secret reenactments

The Simpsons Reenactment

There has been a lot of photographers reenacting memories from the past, however when I came across these captures from The Simpsons I was quite surprised on how the had discretely reconstructed famous photos from the past.

Although this isn't related to what Im going to create for my project as such, it shows how memories and photography can be reconstructed in so many ways.

Creative Writing Challenge!

This exercised was quite fun as well as challenging, to create a sentence out of words from a newspaper. Even though this may of been a serious task to think creatively, me and Josh could help but to create something more humorous and fun. It shows that even if you think of random ideas, eventually they could all come together to create a creative piece.

Taking existing memories and making it your own

MATTHIAS WÄHNER photography

Photography has been used to capture moments in history. Creating memories not on a personal scale, but also on a global scale too. The photographer Mathias Wahner has taken these historical photos and almost made them his own, but placing himself in them. These are humorous not just because of the selection of photos he has chosen to tamper with, but that they are fairly convincing, and sometimes he blends in so well, he goes unnoticed at first.

In a way this is a form of recycling memories. By taking something that was capture of a serious moment in time, and making it into his own more humorous piece. Memories are being relived and remembered in both photographs, but just in slightly different ways.

I really like the idea of recycling memories, especially when the individual gives it a new purpose, or changed the effect of how an audiences feels about a piece.

For my photography project in terms of concept, it might be a fun idea to reenact photos from previous years, maybe including some of my own, from when me or my parents were younger.

Memories Recycled for Art

A New Value

Inanimate objects are an example of things that can create and hold memories. For individuals they can be quite sentimental and be a large part of someones life. We are constantly surrounded by objects that contribute to our lives, and even when it is thought these objects no longer have personal value, it can be recycled and have a new purpose. Certain artists have allowed me to see the possibilities of what can be seen as useless rubbish, turn into works of art.

Even though these art pieces are not exactly pure photography, some have be formed with photographs, which is something I can think about for my photography project.

Derek Gores

Collage 09
Collage 17

Derek Gores recycles magazines, labels, data and assorted found analog and digital material to create his works.

This is a great example of objects that had use at some point, and now have a completely different purpose.

 Erika Iris Simmons

Erika uses cassette tape to create portraits of celebrities, creating interested 3D/textured pieces.
The Beatles

Michael Jackson

Jane Perkins

This has a similar style to Derek Gores collages, however Perkins uses objects instead to create portraits of well known individuals. The pieces were made up of objects collected from charity shops, boots sales and recycling centres and included things like buttons, lego pieces, old bits of toys and random plastic pieces.

Kyle Bean

Although this piece may have less relevance to my photography project, I wanted to look at the possibility of creating art with rubbish. I think this particular model is effective as not only a chicken has be carefully crafted out of egg shells, it plays on the idea of 'what came first, the chicken or the egg?'.

Dead Island Trailer

In terms of how media forms can manipulate time, this is shown well in the Dead Island game trailer.
Using Chronological and Non-chronological scenes to create an emotive short story where the end almost meets in the middle. It shows that even though we are moving forwards in time, the things we create and show can be manipulated.
I really like this trailer as the use of time is unusual and engaging, and allows the audience to un code the narrative enigma created in this trailer.

Near to death experiences

When our time comes to an end, does everything stop or does time for yourself continue somewhere else?
People have memories of what happened when they had close to death experiences. They believed they could see the future, and an insight to what is after life. These memories can give people strength to not be scared of life and the future, what is there for them after death. The fact that several people have experienced some for of the after life is interesting, and increasing the possibility of everyone being able to have this connection. That idea that people can see into the future is also interesting, and is a common think mainly described as people as De ja vu.
Whether these experiences are real is debatable. I think it shows how strong the mind can be, and how it can create the illusion of experiences.

This is a similar idea to the documentary I watched about people being connected with their past lives, who they were previously, and remembering memories from that person.

Photography Workshop

Playing with Light

Not only did we learn the basics of studio flash lighting, and how to operate equipment, we also practiced how to change light to replicate the original image of Steve Jobs. We used three studio flash lights and a reflection board create an evenly lit background, and a heavy shadow on the right side of the face.
We learnt how to use various types of equipment, such as soft boxes and umbrellas to create different types of lighting. Some made the light appear more softer (soft box), where was just a spot light creates a brighter harsher light (typically used for magazine photo shoots).

Memory Task

Facebook

Something I like to do occasionally is to look back at old conversations on Facebook and Skype as away to remember the times with my friends. Instead of taking any old Facebook messages I decided to show the first Facebook messages I sent to my friends, some of which was the first time I had ever talked to them!
It's weird looking back and seeing how different me and my friends used to talk to each other!

This was the first time I talked to my roommate, we were pretty desperate to find a house. I found a post that she put on the UCA freshers page, and then messaged her because I needed to find a room mate and a house.

It look me a while to actually remember what I meant, but now I remember that it was the first time my friend got Facebook, and she had no idea how it works.

First time me and James talked, and it is on the amazingly interested subjects of iphone cases!

Just a little extract of someone I had to practically Facebook stalk in order to find them on there. Don't worry we are good friends! I promise...

Drawings

Over the years me and my friends have drawn pictures for each other, usually for special occasions. I really like to keep them as a memory as I can put them on a wall, and they always make me smile.

Handmade card my friends made me for my 18th Birthday.

My friend Rachel drew what was going to happen after exams.

My wall at home of collected drawings over the years.

Message in a bottle

This idea isn't a specific memory as such, but a general explanation on why friends as important to me, and why I they are what I want to remember the most in the future. To do this I created a message in a bottle, and wrote it almost like a letter to someone who finds it.

Voyager Golden Record

The voyager golden record is a disk made of gold that was sent into space in hopes to reach a new solar system and found by other life forms. It contains sounds and images selected to portray the diversity od life and culture on Earth.

I have a friend who is interested in physics, so I thought I would create his own golden disk to portray himself, by showing images of what I remember he likes.

Photoshop Fun

So photoshop is something i've always just used for fun and unprofessionally. I wouldn't consider myself amazing at photoshop, however there is one thing I thoroughly enjoy doing and Im not bad at is photoshopping my friends heads onto other things.

Below is a collection of ones I have made in the past as well as ones I have made specially for this task. Each picture is relevant to what that person likes. For example, Lord of the Rings is my friends favourite movie so I photoshopped her face onto the DVD case.

In other words... I have no life!

I've also collected a few memes/weird edited pictures that my friends have created of each other and sent to me to make me laugh.
