Dance - An introduction

I made some notes on my first observations and thoughts on dance videos that were shown as an introduction to this dance unit. All are which are different to what I've experienced with dance, and hopefully I can explore these methods of dance and dance video more.

Points in space

  • Colourful set and costume.
  • The use of no musical but manipulated sounds.
  • Trying to  a notion of whispered conversations, misinterpretations.
  • Dance there are no answers but there are questions.
  • There can be honest meaning.

Merce Cunningham (1982)
  • Sets and continuous camera movement
  • Camera is part of that space.
  • No music as such.
  • Click were like dance footsteps but off beat.
  • Percussion based.

Eiko and Koma
  • Nature.
  • Shapes of our body, close contour.
  • Environmental sounds.
  • Dance is more than one components.
  • To me dance is not just about movement but the changing shapes of the body.

Ghostcatching Bill T Jones (1999)
In this dance being used to experiment with digital medium. Choreographic instructions became part of the video itself. The digital medium to represent the dance and trace the movement, something that can be visually achieved in real life or just film itself. The grid at the end controls each others movements.  Dance and digital. Body meets machine.

In the 90s there was access to digital equipment so low budget productions could be made.
