Sound Design Introduction

In our first session we listened to some clips to get an idea of what we could do for final sound project. We also looked at the more scientific/technical aspects of how sounds works.

War of the Worlds 1938
This was interesting to listen to, as back in 1938 even though this only contained a narration and then a strange alien like sound effect in the background, it was very affective. If an audio track was created like this now, the soundscape would be very different, and more likely more complex. The increase of technology has allowed us to easily record and manipulate sounds, creating noises we are unfamiliar with and would not hear naturally.

BBC Radiophonic Workshop - Hitch hikers Guide to the Galaxy (1978)
This particular radio clip was a good example of sound being able to tell a story, and create a sense place and tone. Throughout you are able to follow the characters using sound and your imagination and picture what location they are in and what they are doing.

Elephant (2003)
This was interesting scene from film 'Elephant'. Through the whole 2 shot scene there is a piano track in the background. Although it appears non-diagetic at times, it makes the audience question if it is actually part of the environment as he enters the music building. There is also constant fading in and out of the background music and the diagetic sounds in the scene. To me this give the feeling that the audience is in the mind of the character, and when you can just hear the piano piece it is like the character is thinking and not paying attention to his surroundings.

Our final piece for this unit will be a narrative text piece with a soundscape underneath, to create tone, space and feel towards the text.
