Innovation and Interference An Introduction

London Orbital - Iain Sinclair

This short film highlights the negatives of the M25, and that possibly motorways have made journeys boring and lifeless. However, it also suggests how one road can take you to many places. This was represented by using an archive of videos and photos, layered with radio clips and sound effects in the background to give it a eery negative feel.

"To enter this dead time"

"The M25 is star light years away from earth"

Although it seems like just a road that bring stress and boredom, it still has many stories behind it and takes you to interesting and sometimes dark places. This was reflected in the scene where it showed the asylums along the road that "haunts the M25", and the asylums that then lead to landfills, and areas of pylons where the technology is intruding our atmosphere.

Sounds is interesting, as it gives a slightly creepy/negative tone, sound track and sounds. When it was using medical terms metaphorically to describe the M25, there was the constant sound effect layered underneath the narration of a heart beating (the heartbeat noise that a baby hears when in the mother). This adds texture to the film.

Clogged bypass in medical sense - uses medical references to metaphorically describe the M25.

Measures of Distance - Mona Hatoum
"In this video, the artist tries to overcome the effects of distance, and reflects on geography represented in exile due to war, and on the psychological distance represented in each one’s approach to her womanhood. The video beautifully weaves personal images and audio recordings of a very intimate nature, binding the personal with the political."
The  personal images of her mother naked show how close she is to her mother, represents their relationship and that they have nothing to hide. The palestinian writing from the letters, and the voices also adds to the personal feel.
