Concept Research - Artists Overlaps for Last Year - Natalie Jeremijenko

Natalie Jeremijenko – One Trees
The project was created cloning thousands of saplings with the same genetic makeup. The influences of nature and nurture were tracked due to them being planted in diverse environments by volunteers. It demonstrated the importance of nature and nurture, as well as exploring the realm of cloning and biotechnologies. I feel inspired by a large amount of Jeremijenko's work as she includes interactions with the worlds, and often creates projects that are beneficial to science, ecology and communities. In some aspect this inspires me to start to create work in the future that can be beneficial to our environment, or allows an audience to get a better aspect of the world. A more anthropogenic approach.

How this relates to my project
Cloning has causes huge controversy over the years, from the idealistic of cloning human to creating clone organs for transplantation. Many governments have banned human cloning experimentation for ethical reasons. This relates to some extent to cyborg reproduction and the idea of only needing one living thing or being to create multiple replication. It connects to our idea of creation in the future, and when life begins and even ends (transhumanism explores the possibility of living forever in a computer system). Many boundaries are blurred and I hope to reflect as well as think about all the binaries technology has influenced through hybrid illustrations of spliced animal human hybrids. It also takes in to question who would control the creation of life in future, and if we will have our own input into our future creations. By using people as models for the graphics, and then interviewing themselves on what animal they have a connection with/ favourite animal, I have allowed them to take their own form/their own outcome.
